Projects

Timmy and Ben building the screen printing table at the old Long Beach Gaian Mind community center.

The Gaian Mind's project based outlook was summed up well by the renown eco-artist Paul Hogue in his comments about our old community center at a Long Beach town hall meeting in 2006. He simply stated that it's a place where people are working on ideas for the future in which we're going to need to all come together to solve problems.

The process of moving towards local self-sufficiency is not one of fear or anxiety about a dystopic future. While morbid visions of chaos and collapse weigh on our minds, frequent our dreams, and dominate current events, we hold positive visions of the present and future. We feel that our joyous bond building and life enriching projects are more like "raising the barn" together than shutting the blinds and boarding up the windows. In other words, disaster preparedness need not be a nightmarish process. In fact every step we take towards independence from the tentacles of the industrial megamachine the more healthy, stable, sustainable, free, fit, and connected we are to the earth and each other. Work becomes play, and every new day is built on the accomplishments of the day before. This psychology of interconnected growth has proven to be the antidote to despair and a powerful immune response to the energetic parasites of nihilism and apathy.

We've experimented with many types of projects and have worked hard to pull together a resource base that can empower youth to develop the projects of their dreams. From screen printing, to wood working, to paper making, to free food distribution we've engaged countless people in fun and educational projects.
